Magestry’s Best of Petalsong 126

Here are our (slightly belated) pick for the Best of the May 27th-29th Event:

dogwood-best-pc-compilation

Dogwood because he’s just so interesting and fun to interact with.

This month’s Best PC has become an Elmerton favorite. With his punny sense of humor and overall sense of wonder, innocence, and curiosity, Dogwood, played by Alex Fabian has brought new life to a town jaded by turmoil and huge problems. Dogwood is such a wonderful character and he is played by an equally wonderful person. Alex has been a very helpful member of the Magestry community, helping before, during, and after games, often times staying until the very end. We are very glad that Dogwood was given a chance to shine since it meant that we also got to have Alex back at game. Sadly, most of the pictures we have of Dogwood are of his furry backside, so here’s a Dogwood’s Derriere compilation. Thanks for everything, Alex.

Dogwood is consistently awesome. His immersion, role-playing, and non-traditional style just always gets me. Like, he is OK hiding from most fights, because he doesn’t have to fight. He is just awesome.

Dogwood did a great job this weekend with being briganded nearly twice and was generally fun to hang out with.

Dogwood. Watching him be scared of the hit squads coming after him was entertaining, and watching the town rally to protect him was endearing. He is also hilarious in general, and a joy to be around.

This month’s Best NPC is a little out of the ordinary for this post. However, after an 11 year “Best of” dry mikey-best-ofspell (read: being a Game Master), and since the PELs have declared him such, we would like to commend Mike Faulk for his altogether impressive ability to be able to entertain his players and help to keep the game running smoothly. Though we don’t usually include GMs in this post, I thought it was high time to recognize Mike for his dedication and seriously hard work that he does for this game. Mike has helped develop and balance the rules, writes thoughtful and entertaining plots, and over the years has helped to create and maintain our community. You can even still read the Livejournal that we used (and that Mike built) before Facebook became hip. Mike is a huge part of our community and he continues to do wonderful things before, during, and after each event. Thank you, Mike! <3

Mike Faulk, as always, has impressed me with the quality and thought that gets put into every plot he writes. Every character he plays is engaging and completely fleshed out. Like an onion, Mike’s characters have layers. They will also make you cry.

Zombie for one because I never though I would see a zombie apply for a job at ACES (Zombie would make a great bouncer though).

Zombie! Always hilarious and highly entertaining!

Hail the New Queen of Shadows!

shadow-queenHer Majesty, Queen Rebekkah Syke, has all but claimed the long vacant throne of Shadow Queen. For too long the Realm of Shadows has been divided and at war within itself, but now Queen Skye has united this roiling Realm and will see the beginnings of complete unification under her rule with the completion of the Mores Consorti as the 17th day of Harvestwane begins, in this the 126th year of the Age of Fortune. Since Rebellion and Revolt have lain festering in the heart of her rule, Elmerton, her Majesty has declared that the ceremony to accept a Consort and therefore confirm her crown will happen there, in full sight of both support and opposition. The actual Coronation will be held at a later time in the Shadow Realm proper, in the Queen’s Halls.

Player Submission: Point Edgar Woman Goes Missing!

Outspoken critic of the king’s recent decrees, Sable Melas, has recently been reported as missing. Her last known location appears to be the site of other reported disappearances in the last few months. Ongoing investigations up to this point have been inconclusive but there has been no evidence of foul play, though the family suspects otherwise.
If you have any information, please contact the Melas family in Point Edgar.

Explosion at Fledgar’s Fellers Work Site!

FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED!!!

A massive explosion destroyed a major work site and a valuable piece of mining machinery just two days ago. Due to the nature of the blast, sabotage is the likely cause but clues as to who would do such a terrible act are quite scant. Hector Cavalerra, the foreman of the the mining compay had this to say:
“It was a terrible act of sabotage done by cowards who wish to remain in the shadows rather than own up to their own violence. Its a miracle no one was killed and the fire that it caused was small enough that no real damage came from it. The very expensive and complicated-to-build machine however is destroyed beyond repair. Our work is going to be held back another 6 to 8 months at the very least due to the upcoming freeze cause by the colder months. This couldn’t have happened at a worse time. We will exhaust every effort to find the people who did this.”
Anyone with any information is to report to the town guard, royal officials, or to the mining company itself. Stay vigilant!!!

Player Submission: Common Man’s Guide to the Evernight

At the end of the Age of Arrival, the town of Elmerton was ripped from Magesta and brought to Mongrella to defeat the Sleeping Lord Villarious. When the Elmerton was ripped from Magesta, what was left behind is known as the Evernight Forest. The Evernight is a lightless, soundless forest. Many who enter are lost, never to be seen again, but many other have appeared in Elmerton since it’s reappearance in 118 Age of Fortune.

According to what Elmertonians were told at the time, there were two timestreams of the History of Magesta and at the end of the age of Arrival, these somehow merged into one. Only those who were not present on Magesta at the end of the Age of Arrival have intact memories from before the merging. In most cases, the two different versions of a person merge, but sometimes two different versions of a person arrive out of the Evernight as separate people.

Two old men named Evernight Morris and Pep reside in the Evernight.  They have helped the town at Evernight Morrisvarious times. Together they have been able to bind bits of the Evernight to Elmertonians to allow them to be Everguides. Everguides are able to see and hear in the Evernight and are able to navigate it to a limited degree. Current Everguides is town currently or recently are Solun, Dante, Scindo, Galynn, Alianora, and Felix.

Pep is a Mavin – a former Steward of Magic – and as such has access to the memories of every Steward of Magic that ever lived, including Sadius, the creator of Magesta. Morris, however, is a relative unknown. According to Everguide Scindo, Morris has no memories during the time period between the departure of Elmerton to its return 117 years later. When Scindo asked Pep flatly “what is Morris” Pep’s reply was “what do you want him to be?” Scindo said he “is not convinced that [Pep’s reply] was not an answer.” Scindo and Galynn suspect the possibility that Morris and Pep respectively are future versions of themselves, there is reason to believe that Morris is a manifestation of the Evernight itself.

Through the Evernight it is possible to travel to other places and times although usually not far from Elmerton, Only Everguides have been able to navigate the paths with any control or purpose.  Recently the Everguides were asked by Morris to blaze a path to the Bloodwaters so other people in Elmerton can get to them. Felix has succeeded in doing so, it is now possible  with Everguide assistance to walk the path to the time at Shrieber’s Farm when the clear Bloodwaters were manifest and for people find the bloodwater color to which they are attuned.

The Dawnbreakers were an organization created by House Windlock to protect and police the Evernight Forest. Over the course of more than a century, oversight became lax and the job became an easy one causing  numbers swell and the Dawnbreakers to became careless. When the town of Elmerton returned and displaced the Evernight, most of the Dawnbeakers inside the Evernight died.

With most Dawnbreakers dead, and Elmerton where the Evernight once stood, Countess Teadei Windlock disbanded the organization on the 1st of Newgreen, 118 AoF.  The Dawnbreakers came to capture Morris at some point, but were defeated by the town of Elmerton. My knowledge of the incident remains limited to Scindo saying that Morris claimed he “didn’t want to go back.”

The destruction of the Dawnbreakers caused the creation of a new entity, Byron. Byron is a Dusk Night currently residing in a house in the Evernight. Dusk Nights are created when a large number of people die simultaneously (often in battle, hence “knight”) at the Shadowstream (i.e “dusk”) When the town was seeking Byron’s aid, he was asked what he wanted. He expressed a desire for the Darkwalker , described in detail below. The incarnation of Pestilence, Morkanthos, was recently trapped in Byron’s basement, but has since been released.

The Darkwalker is a “golem-like” being built by the Shadow Smith Sardkern Scurath. He did so while Dark Walkerunder the mental and physical control of a cult of madmen known as the Ashynnied. The Ashynnied worship and are controlled by a what they call “The Darkness” but is in actuality 3 distinct beings, temporal doppelgangers assuming the form of “Dark Stars”. The Darkwalker is a conduit from the Evernight to the Shadow Realm that currently is a one-way trip that can only be used by “marked members” of the Ashynnied. That could change to be a two way conduit, but the Shadow Smith created a “failsafe” such that a single person or group could not entirely control the Darkwalker.

Several parties are interested in controlling the Darkwalker. As mentioned above, Byron is one such party. Rebekah Sky – matriarch of the cannibalistic Blackgates below elmerton and one of the main contenders to the be the next Shadow Queen – is another. Anyone else who would seek to be Shadow Queen of Shadow Consort would also be interested in the Darkwalker. Of course, anyone else interested in quick passage between the Evernight and the Shadow Realm would find controlling the Darkwalker advantageous. A shadowmancer from the Dimension of Daent his tried to take control of the Darkwalker to return home.

FilcherThe only other known residents of the Evernight are creatures with “skull-like visages” and protruding horns and teeth known to the town as Filchers. Filchers with different color faces have different abilities  Blue ones seem to have psychic powers, with a noted focus on delusions. Brown ones appear as patches of darkness moving low to the ground, with the Filcher itself popping out only briefly to to take a look around or steal small objects. This may be the reason for the name “Filcher.” While cloaked in darkness, brown Filchers are not affected by attacks or spells, save for the spell Dismissal, which forces the darkness back, exposing the Filcher for a brief time.

Filchers with red markings are competent fighters, but are seemingly displaced in time, reacting to attacks and spells before or after the attacks take place (from an observer’s perspective) According to Galynn’s diagnosis spell, they suffer from a “temporal abnormality.” Red Filchers may react to some stimuli immediately, some stimuli after a delay and some stimuli before the cause occurred.

For more information, consult an Everguide (Solun, Dante, Scindo, Galynn, Alianora, or Felix.)

Innovation Within the Allegiant! Orphans Rescued!

Just outside of the city of Riverton is a rough and tumble jumble of ramshackle huts, crude tents, and dirty dwellings that look like they have been built and set up by children. In fact, that is almost entirely the case! They call this makeshift town “Orphan City” and it is filled with the lost and orphaned of many races from all over the kingdom and even the rest of Aszuron. These orphans range in age from 2 or 3 years old to sometimes as old as 18 or 19 and have been on their own for most of their lives. Orphan City has been a place for these lost and lonely to find help, companionship, independence, and even some semblance of family. However, being “ruled” by children and young adults with little to no means of making money and less ability and know-how about how to grow food or get other supplies, Orphan City has also become a place of where survival of the fittest and strongest has become the law, despite the attempts of several of the older inhabitants to keep it from becoming so. It has earned itself a reputation of being dangerous and hostile to “outsiders” and town officials have received many complaints about its existence.

The Allegiant in Riverton has been working on programs throughout the city to help orphans within its Fortune's Children Symbolboundaries and has recently developed an innovative new program called Fortune’s Children that will help to not only find these lost children homes that will help them build character and develop good, lifelong habits and strong moral compasses, but will help the working families throughout Irvanshire as well. Executor Porri the Advocate has been working tirelessly in cooperation with the Messengers’ Guild, the Freetradesmen, and several other organizations to secure homes with farming families in the more remote areas of Irvanshire to take in and adopt these orphans in order to help with farm life. In return, these families, hand-picked by the Allegiant, will feed, shelter, and care for the minds, bodies, and souls of those they adopt within a strict Allegiant-designed regimen, ensuring that they grow up to be strong, compassionate, and well-adapted citizens of the kingdom.

Fortune’s Children has been widely accepted as a true innovation of the times and is lauded for its compassion and wisdom. As such, it has been implemented very quickly and Orphan City was the first target. Within weeks the piecemeal village had been emptied and its inhabitants sent to various places around the kingdom. Cleanup is currently underway to remove all traces of the unsightly occupation and it is though that this program will extend to other cities where homelessness and large populations of orphans are prevalent.

Executor Porri also wishes to extend the invitation of a warm, caring home to those families within the kingdom who are in a state of poverty so extreme that they feel they can no longer take care of their children. If you find yourself in such a heartbreaking situation, please seek out your local Allegiant officials to apply to be a part of this wonderful program. Alternatively, if you are a family in a place to help those in need (and who may need extra hands to help with your trade or farm) and are willing to raise your family members (new and old) according to a regimen laid out by the Allegiant, please again contact your local officials to apply.

It is through innovations such as this that we find ourselves in a more compassionate, caring, and altogether more wonderful world and it is the wish of Executor Porri and the Allegiant that this will lead to many more programs and innovations in the future.

Magestry’s Best of Newgreen/Petalsong 126

Here are our picks for the “Best of ” the April 29th-May 1st event:

Sebastion really stood out this game. His roleplaying is always fantastic, but it was nice to see it showcased!

Sebastion really stood out this game. His role-playing is always fantastic, but it was nice to see it showcased!

This event’s Best PC is none other than the Two-Years-Running-Town-Scoundrel/pirate faemin, Sebastian Dark played by Marque Sterling! Marque has been with Magestry for a while now, and we have had the pleasure of watching him grow as a role-player and as a valued member of our community. Marque has consistently showed dedication, loyalty, and helpfulness to the game, whether it’s flying from Washington D.C. to play (!!), NPCing for us for a while, or staying to help clean up whenever he can. This game we really got to see Marque’s role-playing skills highlighted, and we were duly impressed. Thanks so much, Marque, and congrats!

Here are some things you had to say about Marque’s performance this game:

“Sebastian – Awesome job role-playing a variety of emotions this event!”

“Sebastian did a great job with his angsty plot.”

“Sebastian for roleplay, not just for the major drama with Donovan, but also consistently throughout this event.”

“Sebastian, He really showed his role playing props in dealing with his friend and the conflict between his friend and the town.”

“I feel this event Sebastian deserves special recognition for his role playing when it came to Donovan and Amelia. He did a very good job of showing how hurt he was at what was transpiring.”

“Speaking of Marque, his roleplaying this event was fanTASTIC. He was legitimately distraught after the events of Friday night, and I overheard his and Silver’s conversation. It was very charged, and Marque showed some damn chops. He kept this up the entire game, especially when Donovan showed up again Saturday. I pretty much hung around just to watch him work. Very worthwhile.”

“Sebastian was my favorite PC. His role-playing shone brightly the moment he realized he could blink through the circle of protection and attempt to kill the Morticent, realizing that it was actually Donovan, and every moment afterward all throughout the weekend.”

Dave Kopchick. The man was everywhere this weekend. Fountain of energy which I think helped keep the awesome train going this weekend!

Dave Kopchick. The man was everywhere this weekend. Fountain of energy which I think helped keep the awesome train going this weekend!

This event’s Best NPC is, again, not a stranger to this particular accolade, but he is another NPC who truly deserves this award. Dave Kopchick was a whirlwind this event (and in the weeks previous to the event) helping to write plots, getting up early to put out speaks and spots and/or do early morning lessons, leading crunch squads, and generally helping to make sure that things ran smoothly throughout the weekend. Dave has become an integral part of the staff and we are sure happy that he decided to do so. Thank you so much for all your help, Dave!

“Kopchick with his variety of roleplaying and adding bits of non-essential, but environment enhancing little plots. He is always so wonderful!”

“Hanging out with Dave all morning as Baxter was a great time. I know Dave put a lot of hours into that component lesson.”

“The goblin that learned literacy with Dogwood. It was very comical and memorable.”

“My absolute favorite NPC this event hands down goes to Dave Kopchick. Hands down, without a doubt. He tackles each role with everything hes got, whether its a silly NPC like Gigglefritz, or a more tortured soul like the Emancipator, or even just as a crunchie. He has this enthusiasm about the game that is so blatantly clear and very nice to see. We are very lucky to have him back.”

“Baxter was certainly a fun npc to be around the excursion Sunday morning for components and his cheese lesson were both entertaining and informative.”

“Does Dave sleep? I think probably not. He is an unstoppable force of nature and I think has been a great addition to the game since he’s been back.”

Player Submission: An Open Letter to My Friends in Elmerton

My dear friends and residents of Elmerton,

It is with a heavy heart I must say ‘Farewell’ for an indefinite amount of time. Taking Aralia’s advice, I’ve decided to search for my father after many moons with no response to my attempts to reach him. It’s very unlike him to not answer, and I have not seen him in any of the places we used to frequent at certain times of the year…

I hope for the best for everyone in all of your endeavors. Incarnations know I will certainly worry about all of you while I’m away…

With love and hope to see you all soon,

Remari Wintercress
